Biography 

Marianne Fanous (b. 1985, Cairo, Egypt) is a self-taught contemporary Egyptian artist who lives and works in Cairo. Although she holds a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy and Biotechnology, she has cultivated her artistic practice independently through years of experimentation, intuition, and an enduring commitment to creative exploration.

Marianne Fanous draws inspiration from her Christian faith, Egyptian identity, the country's landscapes and agricultural heritage, and the organic forms found in nature—particularly palm trees and the rhythms of the natural world. Working through expressive abstraction, she explores themes of creation, hope, belonging, and transformation, creating paintings that celebrate both the richness of the natural environment and the resilience of the human spirit.

Her practice is defined by spontaneity, expressive mark-making, and an intuitive approach that allows each composition to develop organically rather than through predetermined planning. Rich textures, layered surfaces, and vibrant color palettes create immersive visual experiences that invite contemplation, joy, and emotional connection.

Marianne Fanous works across acrylic, oil, watercolor, ink, acrylic markers, and mixed media, often incorporating metallic elements and tactile surfaces that enhance the physical presence of each painting. Her works balance expressive freedom with a deep sensitivity to landscape, memory, and spirituality.

She has participated in group exhibitions in El Gouna and Egypt's North Coast, and her work is held in private collections in Egypt, Germany, the United States, and Canada.

Artist Statement

My artistic practice explores the relationship between faith, nature, and identity through the language of expressive abstraction. Rooted in my Egyptian heritage and inspired by the country's landscapes, agricultural traditions, and the organic forms of nature—especially palm trees—I create intuitive paintings that celebrate the beauty, rhythm, and quiet imperfection of the natural world.

My Christian faith is a constant source of inspiration, shaping both my creative process and the emotional atmosphere of my work. Rather than illustrating religious narratives, I seek to express the wonder of creation, the possibility of hope, and the sacred presence that can be found in everyday life.

I work with acrylic, oil, watercolor, ink, acrylic markers, and mixed media, building layered, tactile surfaces through gestural mark-making, rich textures, and occasional metallic accents. Instead of beginning with a predetermined composition, I allow each painting to unfold intuitively. Color, movement, and material guide the process, creating space for spontaneity, discovery, and unexpected meaning.

At the heart of my practice is the belief that creativity is an act of trust and exploration. I am drawn to themes of belonging, transformation, landscape, and the quiet dialogue between the physical and the spiritual. My paintings do not offer fixed narratives; instead, they invite viewers to slow down, embrace curiosity, and reconnect with a childlike sense of wonder. Through abstraction, I hope to create moments of reflection that encourage people to see nature, themselves, and the world around them with renewed openness, gratitude, and hope.
